FOR the first time, fewer than half of the population of England and Wales describe themselves as Christian.
Some 46.2% of the population, 27.5 million people, told the 2021 census that they are Christian, down from 59.2% in 2011.
People who said they had no religion increased from a quarter to a third of the population.
Stephen Evans, chief executive&nbsp;of the National Secular Society, said: "It's official - we are no longer a Christian country." In the census, carried out every 10 years and released yesterday, the Office for National Statistics asked "what is referring your religion" to people's affiliation, rather than beliefs.
Those identifying as non-religious leapt to 22.2&nbsp;million from 25.2% to 37.2%.
Muslims were the next largest category, up from 4.9% to 6.5%.
The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, said: "We have left behind the era when many almost automatically identified as Christian.
"But other surveys consistently show how the same people still seek&nbsp;spiritual truth and values to live by. Mr Evans said the figures show that having the Church so embedded in the UK constitution is now "undemocratic".
Christianity came to Britain with the Romans in 43AD but it was not until around 600BC that it flourished, when monks such as Aidan of Lindisfarne converted Anglo-Saxons to Catholicism.
