FORMER Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey has called on the Government to make time to debate changing the law on assisted dying.
Lord Carey, the most senior bishop in the Church of England from 1991 to 2002, said it was "profoundly Christian" to prevent suffering.
In his submission to a Health and Social Care Committee inquiry on assisted dying he said it was an "act of great generosity, kindness and human love" to help dying people.
His opinion opposes the official view of the Church of England. The current Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby warned in 2021 that a law-change would be "unsafe" and "no amount of safeguards" could protect vulnerable people.
