MICK Lynch of the RMT seems set on a suicide mission. As train travel collapsed during the pandemic income and rail plunged, you'd expect the train union boss to be doing everything he can to encourage people to travel by train. Instead, he is doing the very opposite by threatening to cripple Christmas travel, bringing misery to thousands of travellers hoping to see their families over the festive period.
The same is true of the Royal Mail, striking just when people want to send Christmas cards and presents to loved ones.
The existential threat to both these troubled industries cannot be underestimated. When the pandemic struck and lockdown was imposed, passenger numbers collapsed and the Government spent over £14billion of taxpayers' money propping up the railways.
The crisis continued into this year with only 79 per cent of pre-Covid services running timetables and Disrupted delayed train services continue to frustrate those commuters who do come into work, whereas working from home is now the new normal, reducing the overall number of train journeys significantly for the foreseeable future.
