TRUSS: I WILL FIGHT OFF BID TO SPLIT UNION

UNION 'SAFE IN LIZ'S HANDS'

LIZ Truss has vowed to defend the Union and reject Nicola Sturgeon’s demand for another Scottish independence vote.

The Tory leadership favourite also said that she was “delighted” to back the Unite The Kingdom crusade run by the Daily Express.

And, in a boost to her fight to keep the UK together, former Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns defected from rival Rishi Sunak’s camp to hers.

Foreign Secretary Ms Truss’s campaign to become Prime Minister was helped as polls put her four points ahead of Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer as the best person to lead the country.

She said that her early years living in Scotland had made her a “child of the Union” and she promised to deliver for all parts of the country. Both candidates were campaigning in Scotland today ahead of hustings tonight in Perth.

The Unite The Kingdom crusade is urging politicians and other public figures to make the case for strengthening the UK in the face of a growing constitutional crisis.

Ms Truss said: “I’m delighted to back the Daily Express’s Unite The Kingdom campaign. In 2014, Scottish nationalists accepted that their referendum was a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and I will hold them to that.

“A second independence referendum is the wrong priority. Nicola Sturgeon and her SNP Government should instead be focused on helping hardworking families in Scotland through the global cost-of-living crisis, improving frontline services and creating more jobs.”
