MORE than 1,000 Afghans who worked with British forces are still trapped inside their country, the Daily Express has learned.

The Ministry of Defence is urgently trying to evacuate the terrified individuals and their families from wartorn Afghanistan amid fears Taliban death squads are hunting them down.

Defence chiefs estimate there are around 1,200 eligible personnel – many of whom are interpreters – who each want to bring “four or five” members of their family to the UK.

Officials are subsequently working on evacuating around 6,200 people.

Another 1,150 people are stuck in Pakistan awaiting a flight to the UK.

Tortured

Others have fled to neighbouring countries such as Iran.
