Home Secretary Suella Braverman said she will not compromise on security when 1,000 Border Force staff walk out for eight days – but that will mean “serious disruption”.

Widespread industrial action over the festive period is already hitting the struggling hospitality sector, with pubs and restaurants warning yesterday they expect 40 per cent of bookings to be cancelled during rail strikes next week.

Downing Street insisted the country cannot afford the double-digit pay rises being demanded by unions.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said: “It is inflation that is our shared enemy and if we were to push ahead with double-digit pay deals across the public sector, at a cost of £28billion, that’s a cost of £1,000 per household.

“That would embed inflation, which currently is expected to fall significantly next year. So we would be acting against everyone’s interests if we were to take all the demands and meet them in full.”
