Insiders have said the only child of Elvis struggled in the final years of her life, shunning the spotlight she was born into.
Her final social media post saw the singer open up about living with “grief” and feeling “destroyed” after her son’s death. Lisa Marie died in hospital on Thursday after going into cardiac arrest at her home in Calabasas, California. She was 54.
In a haunting final Instagram update before her death, the grieving mum talked about life after her son Benjamin Keough took his own life. The 27-year-old died from a selfinflicted gunshot wound on July 12, 2020.
Marking National Grief Awareness Day last August, singer Lisa Marie wrote an essay about the overwhelming grief she continued to feel over her son’s sudden death.
She wrote: “Since I have been living in the horrific reality of its unrelenting grips since my son’s death, I thought I would share a few things to be aware of in regard to grief. If not to help yourself but maybe to help another who is grieving.”
Lisa Marie said she found that “grief does not stop or go away in any sense”.
She added: “Grief is something you will have to carry with you for the rest of your life, in spite of what certain people or our culture wants us to believe. You do not ‘get over it’, you do not ‘move on’, period.”
She admitted to feeling “judged and blamed” for her son’s death.
