Some 45 per cent of people have been unable to pay with notes or coins in restaurants, cafes and car parks within the last few weeks.
One in five have found this fairly or very inconvenient, the research for ATM network Link found.
And despite the reliance of businesses on contactless payments, the majority of the 2,100 shoppers (71 per cent) had used cash in the previous two weeks.
