LIFESAVING PLAN TO BOOST HEALTH SYSTEM
RISHI Sunak has promised a lifesaving shake-up of the NHS inspired by the Covid jabs taskforce – and backed by an extra £113million.
The Prime Minister wants to boost the over-stretched service by cutting down on bureaucracy so staff are freed to tackle the country’s biggest health challenges. He said the funding will back pioneering work in four “healthcare missions” of cancer, obesity, mental health and addiction.
Mr Sunak pledged that the vaccines taskforce which sourced millions of jabs “in record time...will now become a blueprint for how we harness the best talent and expertise from around the world and drive investment in research and development”. Each of the missions will be led by an independent expert chosen by a panel that includes Dame Kate Bingham, inset below, who headed the task force in the pandemic.
The Prime Minister admitted that the health service “faces real pressures”, adding “which is why we are investing over £100million in the technologies and medicines of the future to address some of the biggest public health challenges facing our country.
“This funding will improve outcomes for patients, ease existing pressures on the system and ensure that we are amongst the first to benefit from medical breakthroughs.
“Importantly it will also help save the NHS millions of pounds that could otherwise be spent on patient care.
