A Los Angeles Times profile said father-of-four Bishop Taylor, 68, was one of Nixon's closest confidants in his later years, co-executor of his estate and director of the Nixon library.
The Los Angeles diocese's website says Bishop Taylor has "devoted himself to promoting reconciliation, transparency".
