South Africa is the match that should finally tell us where England stand nine months out from the World Cup.
The picture is so blurred after an erratic autumn, during which England have lost to Argentina, breezed past Japan and played two games in one against New Zealand, that it needs clarity.
Won one, drawn one, lost one so far this autumn is not a record to be overly proud of but, if they could knock over the world champions, it would give the window a healthier look. The key for England is to take the gloves off and really tear into South Africa from the start instead of waiting to be boxed into a corner.
