The New Zealander, 75, has become a household name from hit movies such as The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon and Dead Calm.
But last week his new memoir Did I Ever Tell You This? revealed the father-of-four had been fighting an aggressive cancer.
Thankfully he has been in remission for eight months.
In the shock opening of his book he wrote: "The thing is, I'm crook. Possibly dying. I may have to speed this up."
