AS EVIDENCE was picked over in the sensational Wagatha Christie trial, the clues pointed in one direction. Yesterday, Mrs Justice Steyn’s 76-page judgment served as the denouement in a mystery worthy of a blockbuster crime novelist.

She tied together all the strands and ran the rule over some of the most notorious episodes in the High Court libel trial.

Coleen Rooney, she noted, was “an honest and reliable witness” who “sought to answer the questions she was asked without any evasion”.

She called evidence “consistent with the contemporaneous evidence and with the evidence given by her witnesses”.

But the judge found Rebekah Vardy’s testimony “manifestly inconsistent” on “many occasions”.

She added: “It is necessary to treat Mrs Vardy’s evidence with very considerable caution.”
