THE first Ukrainian grain ship to sail for months was on its way to Lebanon last night – and 25 million tonnes could follow.

There were emotional scenes amid hopes that the trapped harvest could begin to make a dent in the world food crisis as the Razoni sounded its horn on leaving Odesa with 27,000 tonnes aboard at 6 am.

Turkey, which brokered the deal to restart exports, said “more will follow” in the days ahead. Ukraine infrastructure minister Oleksandr Kubrakov added: “Thanks to the support of partner countries and the United Nations, we were able to fully implement the agreement.”

One crewman said yesterday’s sailing was the “best feeling” of the year.
