PLAYFUL puffins are a joy to behold but climate change is threatening to bring the curtain down on these birds known as "clowns of the sea".

Populations of puffins, which have a British base on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast, are rapidly declining due to over-fishing, predators and weather conditions.

They have been placed on the red list of endangered species and experts fear they could vanish completely from the North Sea islands within 50 years.
