Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan spoke as most services were cancelled. Aslef members and the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) walked out in a long-running row over pay and conditions.
It left much of the country with no trains, as operators such as Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Northern and Southern ground to a halt.
Speaking from a picket line at London’s Euston station, Mr Whelan said: “What option do we have? If you haven’t had a pay rise for four years, do you wait five? Do you wait six or seven?”
