BORIS Johnson sparked diplomatic confusion after it emerged he is acting as a "back channel" for the UK and the West with dictator President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela.

Boris made secret 'back channel' trip to dictator

The former Prime Minister secretly flew to the South American country last month for unofficial talks with the socialist autocrat, and it is believed he called for free and fair elections there.

He also urged support for Ukraine, amid fears that Venezuela may supply arms to Russia. It was claimed that Mr Johnson was acting as a "back channel" for the West, since the UK does not recognise Maduro's position.
