India is among the first five countries to join the MAC, at the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) at Sharm elSheikh in Egypt. The others are Australia, Japan, Spain, and Sri Lanka.
The move is in line with India's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5-3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent, through forest and tree cover additional by 2030.
