IN A move that has been hailed as a "transformative step" by Football Australia (FA) CEO James Johnson, the governing body has announced plans to establish a national second tier, with a targeted launch date of March 2025.
This marks a significant development in the Australian football landscape, signalling a renewed commitment to expanding the game's reach and fostering a more competitive environment.
The initial cohort of eight foundation clubs has been unveiled, with five representing the state of New South Wales - APIA Leichhardt, Sydney United, Marconi Stallions, Wollongong Wolves and Sydney Olympic - and the remaining three hailing from Victoria - Preston Lions, Avondale FC and South Melbourne, where former captain and coach Ange Postecoglou remains a revered figure.
Football Australia intends to add two to four additional clubs from other states or territories following a refined application process.
