अनाज का थोक कारोबार करने वाले राजस्थान के खंडाच गांव के तीन पाटनी भाइयों- अशोक, सुरेश और विमल ने अस्सी के दशक में ही मार्बल खनन की संभावनाएं पहचान ली थीं. 1993 में मोरवाड़ में सोचीसमझी रणनीति के साथ खदानें लीज पर लेने के साथ वियतनाम में दो खदानों के अधिग्रहण और आयातित उपकरणों के जरिए उन्होंने न सिर्फ अपना बल्कि किशनगढ़ का भी भाग्य बदलकर उसे मार्बल सिटी ऑफ इंडिया बना दिया. नतीजतन मकराना मार्बल के कारोबार की चमक अपेक्षाकृत फीकी पड़ गई.
जयपुर राजमार्ग पर अजमेर से 25 किलोमीटर पहले स्थित दो लाख की आबादी वाले किशनगढ़ में आज संगमरमर के 6,500 कारोबार, 2,000 संयंत्र और 40,000 कर्मचारी और बिचौलिये हैं. यहां संगमरमर का उत्पादन नहीं होता, लेकिन संगमरमर की ही बदौलत खरीदार नजदीक ही स्थित मकराना की खदानों को एक तरह से भूलने लगे हैं, जहां कभी इसका अकेला बाजार और खदानें हुआ करती थीं.
