The Italian General Election 2022 was a snap election held on 25th September 2022, after the fall of Mario Draghi’s administration. The outcomes of the general election showed the center-right alliance led by Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy Fratelli d’Italia), an extreme-right political party with neo-fascist roots, winning an outright majority of seats in the Italian Parliament. In a record-low voter turnout, Meloni’s party became the largest in Parliament with 26% of the vote, making her likely to become Prime Minister of Italy, as per the pre-election agreement among the centreright coalition parties. Political commentators observed that the results altered the geopolitics of the European Union, following far-right gains in France, Spain, and Sweden. The election outcome marked Italy’s first farright-led government and the country’s most right-wing government since 1945. The newly elected legislature was seated on 13th October and Meloni and her entire cabinet will likely assume office by the end of October.
Background
After China, Italy was the second country to be affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving a trail of disaster all over this picturesque nation. Thousands of deaths and serious socioeconomic crises added to the various social protests in the metropolises of the peninsula. Italy, which is politically famous for both Rightwing and Left-wing populisms, allowed the main parties of the far right, Matteo Salvini’s Lega per Salvini Premier and Meloni’s Fratelli D’Italia, to politically profit from the severe state of affairs by criticising the administration in power, incumbent Premier Giuseppe Conte, the European Union, the social, health, and economic policies adopted, and immigration policy and the reception of refugees, among other distresses.
