Glasgow's Dog Lover Show offers a fun, furry, informative weekend

THE Newfoundland, bred as a working dog for fishermen, may not be the ideal pet for a citycentre flat. The smaller Skye terrier, while also descended from working stock, may be more suitable. Others may go for the golden retriever, a Scottish breed whose calm nature makes it a good family companion.

The Dog Lover Show in Glasgow this September will be packed with this sort of information for prospective owners, as well as a feast of doggy-based fun including agility demonstrations, a kids' zone, vets, grooming experts and the stars of social media - Insta Dogs.

Event director Robin Chalmers said there is something for everyone and every dog. "It is basically everything under one roof. There will be around 100 stands, under 16s are free and we have a Kids Zone. We have an adopt and rescue zone to find out about fostering dogs.

"Whether you are an owner or a prospective owner, or if you just really love dogs, it's a perfect day out."

Insta Dogs have become a social media sensation, gaining thousands of hits when their pictures are posted. Some of the most popular will be there and are sure to attract a big crowd, says Robin. "A lot of their fans will come to the show to learn more about them."

Kennel Club breeders and handlers will be a central part of the show - demonstrating and teaching visitors about different types of dog.

Robin said, "A lot of what we do is educating the public about different breeds and their journeys - how they came to be where they are. We have a Meet the Breed section where the public can learn more about the dog. Over the pandemic we saw many dogs rehomed - it is important to know if a dog is going to suit a household."

The Dog Lover Show is on September 9 and 10 at the SEC Centre, Glasgow. See thedoglovershow.co.uk
