MY BAD BACK WAS CANCER

MEDI-FILE

'It must be from mowing the lawn,' I sighed to my osteopath.

My back had been hurting for a while. I'd had remedial massages, but to no avail.

I'd also recently lost my appetite. But it wasn't until my boss at the University of Queensland said I was looking pale, that I finally visited my doctor.

'It's probably a stomach virus,' my GP said, but sent me for an ultrasound.

'We've found something,' she said afterwards.

It was October 16, 2021, and I never returned to work. I was rushed in for an MRI followed by an endoscopic ultrasound and biopsy, which were inconclusive.

'We can see what happens or go in now,' a surgeon said.

'I don't want to wait,' I replied.

So the following month, I was wheeled in for investigative keyhole surgery.

I woke up in shock to a massive incision running from under my breasts to my belly button and halfway to my left-hand side.
