Kyoto may be Japan’s ancient capital, but the city is far from old-fashioned, especially when it comes to places to stay. A stream of new and upcoming hotel openings is making this perennial tourist destination even more appealing. Some of the recent additions offer design-forward sojourns; we select some of the most stunning venues in which to spend your downtime in the city, whether you enjoy original art deco fixtures; a minimalist, teahouse-inspired atmosphere; or a modern spin on traditional Japanese design, in a venue opposite a 17th-century castle.
GARRYA NIJO CASTLE
Creative Stronghold
The concept of holistic living guides the design of this wellness-themed property by Banyan Tree, while integrating subtle allusions to the landmark castle
A quiet, bamboo-lined entrance way leads to the foyer of Garrya Nijo Castle, where a spectacular view awaits. When Tatler visited the hotel in November, we were mesmerised by the sight of autumn foliage reflected onto the glossy tops of the lobby’s lacquered tables. It is a scene that invites you to pause for a moment, the space tailor-made for mindfulness; fittingly, the hotel will roll out meditation sessions in warmer weather.
