DESDE EL BALCÓN DE MI HOTEL mi primera mañana en Dubrovnik, puedo observar que la ciudad se lleva el premio gordo en cuanto a atractivo físico. A mi izquierda se encuentra el núcleo verde de la isla de Lokrum; a mi derecha, una ladera emergente; y, más adelante, la escarpada costa del mar Adriático, que culmina en las Murallas fortificadas del casco antiguo.
Ese atractivo explica tal vez por qué, a pesar de todas las calamidades a lo largo de su historia (el terremoto del siglo XVII, la opresión comunista de la Guerra Fría, la Guerra de los Balcanes de los 90) las 40.000 personas que viven en esta ciudad croata muestran buen humor, esperanza, resiliencia y sentido de pertenencia. El dramaturgo irlandés George Bernard Shaw la describió en el pasado como el “Paraíso en la Tierra.”
Bajo la mirada hacia las terrazas sombreadas por árboles y la dejo caer hasta el mar, disfrutando de la sensación de recogimiento antes de la agitación que se muestra más adelante. Hoy voy a explorar el casco antiguo, una concentración de iglesias, palacios, fortificaciones y casas familiares rodeados de almenas y torres en las murallas. Incluso antes de llegar aquí, tenía una imagen mental de todo esto gracias a Juego de Tronos (Dubrovnik fue uno de sus principales lugares de rodaje). Pero en el casco antiguo hay mucho más de lo que se ve en la serie de televisión.
