En lo profundo de los sótanos de la Biblioteca Nacional de Reino Unido se encuentra un tesoro para los amantes de la música. Almacenados en dos puntos diferentes en Londres y Yorkshire hay más de 350.000 discos compactos y 250.000 discos en vinilo, alrededor de un cuarto de millón de discos de 78 rpm y unos 200.000 casetes y cintas de carrete. La colección cubre todos los géneros y épocas, del jazz la heavy metal, de la década de 1920 a la de 2020.
Junto a una selección de cilindros de cera (primer soporte musical comercial) y antiguas ediciones de revistas de música, libros, recortes de periódicos, catálogos y entrevistas grabadas, se trata de una variadísima colección de la que Andy Linehan, ex comisario de Colecciones de Música Popular de la biblioteca, se encuentra comprensiblemente orgulloso.
El equipo de Colecciones de Música Popular no solo se encarga de la conservación de la música sino también de honrar la historia. “Una de las funciones de la Biblioteca Británica es ser la memoria cultural de la nación”, explica Linehan. “Lo hacemos con libros, publicaciones y periódicos y es correcto hacerlo también con la música”.
La colección funciona gracias a donaciones de sellos discográficos, distribuidores, artistas y miembros del público. Como señala Linehan: “Si publicas un libro, un periódico o una revista en Reino Unido, legalmente debes enviar una copia a la Biblioteca Nacional. Sin embargo, esa ley no es aplicable a grabaciones de sonido”.
