Hip-hop artist Awich already rules the Japanese charts. Now, she is keen to collaborate with Indian artists to make the quintessential American art form more global.

In the dynamic realm of Japanese hip-hop, Akiko Urasaki, also known as Awich, has emerged as a trailblazer. Her fusion of traditional Japanese elements with modern hip-hop beats sets her apart, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and cutting-edge. Awich's collaborations with international artists have further amplified her impact. She has also been meeting many Indian hip-hop icons, like Karan Kanchan and KRSNA. As Awich continues to evolve as an artist, her influence extends beyond music, encapsulating a cultural movement that resonates with a diverse audience.

Harper's Bazaar: How has your upbringing influenced your music identity?

Awich: Growing up in Okinawa, I was immersed in a unique cultural blend of indigenous Okinawan, Japanese, and American influences. This melting pot of cultures has deeply influenced my music. The island's rich history and spirit inspire the themes of my lyrics.

HB: How has your journey into hip-hop evolved over the years?

A: I encountered the works of Tupac [Shakur] when I was 14, and just fell in love. Over the years I've experienced ups and downs in life, and lyrically, I aimed to blend deep philosophical lessons I've gained through them with the everyday realities of life. My musical evolution reflects not just my personal growth but also the changing landscape of hip-hop, where I feel diverse voices and innovative sounds continue to be amalgamated into the genre.

HB: Your album "Queendom" received tremendous success. What themes were you exploring in that album?
