Top Gun is in the theatre, Kate Bush is on the music charts, and Russia is now a global villain again. I can’t believe it’s not the 1980s

A MATRIX OF ABSURDITY

ORIGINALLY RELEASED in 1985, Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' has enjoyed a new lease of life after featuring in the Netflix sci-fi show Stranger Things. According to Luminate Data, the song has earned Bush about US$2.3 million in streaming royalties since the show captivated audiences with its latest series.

Debuting 1986, Top Gun too became a cultural phenomenon, grossing US$357 million and maintaining such evergreen popularity that it was re-released in IMAX 3D in 2013. Its follow-up sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, filmed in IMAX format, has grossed over US$1.2 billion worldwide.

The Cold War, a period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, effectively ended in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR. For a while, it seemed like the world was moving forward until 24 February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine in a major throwback to the good old 1980s. Especially given that President Putin is not averse to making thinly veiled nuclear threats.
