What prompted this project?

The concept of biophilic development, which focuses on incorporating nature into urban spaces, is becoming increasingly popular. We recognised this as well as the benefits of connecting with nature in our everyday lives. The Fynbos aims to be at the forefront of this movement in Africa, blending sustainability principles with iconic architecture and on-trend detailing. The complex offers a mix of spaces designed to provide access to the modern ideal. The integration of indigenous flora, clean air, and high design creates a unique setting where the boundaries between nature and the built environment blur. This concept not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the development but also contributes to the wellbeing and sustainability of its occupants.

Overall, The Fynbos represents an exciting step towards creating sustainable, nature-inspired urban spaces that prioritise the wellbeing of their inhabitants while regenerating the urban landscape by combining the expertise of various professionals such as botanists, architects, landscapers, interior designers and sustainability experts. We aim to create a living, breathing building in harmony with its natural surroundings.

Why are biophilic designs so important for the future of design and architecture in Africa?

South Africa is known for its rich biodiversity. stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems. Biophilic design emphasises a strong connection to nature, incorporating natural elements, materials and patterns into built environments. By embracing biophilic designs, African architecture can celebrate the country's unique natural beauty and create spaces that foster a sense of harmony with the surrounding environment. Biophilic designs have been shown to enhance human health and wellbeing. They can reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and increase productivity and creativity.
