the Grand Designs Australia Magazine House of the Year Awards was conceived in the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns without any expectation of being able to hold an event. For this reason, we were thrilled to be able to host some of Australia’s leading residential architects and builders at a cocktail-style function this year. The event took place in April at the stunning Cosh Living showroom in Richmond, Melbourne. As well as the premium selection of furniture, the showroom boasts a rooftop space with 360-degree views of Melbourne.
The inaugural Grand Designs Australia Magazine House of the Year Awards were developed to achieve three things:
1. To put the spotlight on outstanding residential projects
2. To showcase those projects to an audience of prospective future clients
3. To demonstrate how positive collaborations between architects and builders during the process can contribute to great client outcomes.
This year’s winner was Hawthorn House by Edition Office and Flux (by Figurehead). Editor, April Ossington, chatted to homeowner and managing director at Figurehead Construction, Joe Grasso, and director of architecture studio, Edition Office, Aaron Roberts. What sets Hawthorn House apart is the fact that the homeowner is an industry professional with more than 20 years of construction experience, which allowed for more architectural freedom and a great deal of trust.
