A section of Historians believe that ex lover Mallika is supposed to be the inspiration behind all plays and poetry of Kalidas
SHAKESPEARE OF INDIA Mahakavi Kalidas!

As per records available, although playwright Shudrakaa wrote a play called 'Mrachkatika' much before Kalidas, but for reasons unknown, Shudrakaa's name hardly gets a mention in present scene of Indian Literature. Well, there is no explanation to that! Just the same way, one cannot really pin point, what made Kalidas so popular? His Sanskrit writings have had a major impact on the society and the same have been translated in a lot of languages and are popular even today after centuries. Everyone may not have read him, but they are familiar with his name and the fact that he is one of the greatest poets of Ancient India. So, let's get to know him little more.

Normally, the plays that are popular whether in Sanskrit, Hindi, English or any other foreign language, are works of fiction but there is lot of reality in texts written by Kalidas for the simple reason that his plays and poetry is majorly based on the Vedas, Puranas, Mahabhaarata and Ramayana.

One of his most popular play is Abhigyaan Shakuntalam' which is true story of Bharat's parents Dushyant and Shakuntala who are ancestors of Bhishm Pitamah.
