AWARD-WINNING ACTRESS Kim Engelbrecht ON THE IMPORTANCE OF PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION - AND BEING NOMINATED FOR AN EMMY!

KEEPING UP WITH KIM

AFTER WEEKS OF PLANNING AND CHATTING ON WHATSAPP, I'M ABOUT TO SPEND A DAY IN KIM ENGELBRECHT'S SHOES.

It's 6:30am and I'm at the Sea Point Pilates studio where Kim trains. She arrives with her hair in a sleek low bun, looking effortlessly beautiful. "These Lululemon leggings are the best! They're not see-through and they're great for movement," she says. We immediately get into the warm-up with the owner of the studio, Christine. The reformer Pilates class is a challenge for me, but when I glance towards Kim, she looks poised and elegant as she expertly manoeuvres the apparatus's resistance cables and gliding platform.

Last year, she scooped the Best Actress SAFTA (South African Film and Television Awards) and earned an International Emmy nomination for her starring role in the local drama series Reyka. Over her more than 20-year career, she's also starred in international shows like Dominion, The Flash and Raised By Wolves. But many of us still remember Kim's breakthrough television appearances, presenting the e.tv teen show Craz-e, and youth series Take 5 on SABC 1, and, of course, her role as Lolly on the popular soapie Isidingo.

Having watched her on TV for so many years, Kim almost feels like an old friend - a feeling that's compounded later on, as she entertains my banter about the International Emmy awards, fame, fitness and life in general. She's easy to talk to and the conversation flows naturally - less cover star interview than casual chat.
