DOES THE MONARCHY NEED ANEW LOOK?
Over in Denmark, the nation has been welcoming a glamorous new king and queen - and the new-look royal family has sparked rumbles for our own 75-year-old monarch.
In January, Queen Margrethe II handed the royal baton to her son Frederik, 55, and his Australian wife Mary, 52. Now, less than two years into his role, King Charles has been urged to step aside and allow the Prince of Wales to take over.
Former Labour MP Stephen Pound suggested the move would rejuvenate the British monarchy. 'I think it would be a wonderful thing,' said Mr Pound.
'The monarchy is in a state of crisis at the present time. We've had possibly the worst few years since [Queen Elizabeth II] passed on. Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing if King Charles said "It's time for a reset"? [If he said] "I've done my best, I've been a faithful and loyal servant.
But now let's step back and let a new generation take over. Let's give the monarchy an injection for the future.
Let's give them a restart. Let's kick-start the monarchy": Queen Margrethe, 83, explained her decision to abdicate after 52 years during her traditional New Year’s Eve speech. Europe’s longest-reigning monarch, who recently underwent an operation on her back, said, ‘The surgery naturally gave rise to thinking about the future – whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation. I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as queen of Denmark.’
The new Queen Mary has often been likened to the Princess of Wales. Both Mary and Kate were ordinary young women, born to middle-class families, who met and fell in love with princes and found themselves living extraordinary new lives.
