There are lots of reasons for bloating, but some people find that they feel more bloated after eating bread, says nutrition support dietitian Sarah Brook. 'There's a common misconception this is because of gluten. But it's only those with coeliac disease who need to avoid it.'

* PORTION SIZE Eating too much of anything can make us bloated.

* FRUCTANS OR OTHER FODMAPS FODMAPs are short-chain carbs, often high in prebiotics. Prebiotics feed gut bacteria, but this can create gas and leave us feeling bloated.

* FIBRE 'Some fibre is fermented by our gut microbes and this produces gas,' says registered dietitian and consultant nutritionist Helen Bond. 'Occasional bloating is normal, and a sign that your gut microbes are doing their job.'
