'Carmine King' are California poppies, or Eschscholzia, low-maintenance hardy annuals that thrive in poor soil but need full sun to perform their best.
This particular variety was introduced to the UK back in 1906. It produces glossy single red blooms above a clump of attractive frondy foliage.
The bushy plants grow to just 8in (20cm) tall so will look fabulous sown under taller shrubs and border plants, and at the front of beds.
Their robust nature and ability to thrive in thin soil means they can also be sown to add colour to rockeries and as under-cover for climbers such as clematis, as long as the larger plants don't block the sun.

California poppies can flower from June to October, and if you sow some now and more next spring you will have plants maturing at different times, giving you a longer window for blooming.
