PTAR 2023 STAGED AT MIDDLEBURG AIRFIELD
African Pilot|June 2023
Over the weekend of Friday 26 to Sunday 28 May, the South African Power Flying Association (SAPFA) staged the annual President’s Trophy Air Race (PTAR) at Middleburg airfield. Although there were only 28 entries the event was safe and a huge amount of fun.

PTAR 2023 STAGED AT MIDDLEBURG AIRFIELD

The Middleburg Aero Club were excellent hosts and the awards dinner held in Irene and Richardt Lovett's immaculate hanger was amazing. This was the third event to be held at Middleburg this year with the Aero Club's AirWeek in March, SAAMA's nationals earlier in May and now the PTAR. Richardt has spent a huge amount of time preparing his hangar for these events which included a stage with an excellent sound system, lighting for above, a data projector and screen as well as many other details that make this venue idea for the hosting of any aviation event.

An event of this nature is not possible without the generous sponsorship of several companies including Santam as the main headline sponsor, Century Avionics, DJA insurance, Aircraft Finance Corporation, ANCOR Aviation aircraft cleaning products, Investment Aircraft, Pilot Insure, ARC Aircraft Risk Company and the Middleburg Aero Club for sponsoring 70 litres of fuel per participating aircraft. Tarryn and Iaan Myburgh were largely reasonable for the organising this PTAR, whilst the ladies from Santam Insurance assisted with the registrations.

About the PTAR

First staged in 1937 and originally known as the Governor's Cup the first race coincided with the opening of the new Durban Stamford Hill airport. Over the years the name changed to the President's Air Race as it evolved into a two-day race handicap race. A further chance came about when the name changed again, this time to the President's Trophy Air Race (PTAR) held every year during the last week of May. This the 84th race had undergone several changes of the rules to accommodate new technology found in modern aircraft. Due to a request from the participants the accuracy element introduced some years ago had been removed, whilst detailed map plotting was re-introduced.
