Lycoming Engines has introduced a solid state, Electronic Ignition System (EIS) unit, that replaces the traditional mechanical magneto on piston-powered General Aviation engines. The Lycoming EIS is an easy, drop-in replacement for magnetos on four and six-cylinder Lycoming piston engines.
How does it work?
In short, simply remove the mechanical Magneto and install the EIS unit in its place while observing the electrical connection requirements. The Lycoming EIS is timed to the number one-cylinder compression stroke Top Dead Centre (0°). This is easily undertaken at installation and requires no further attention. (refer to Lycoming Service Instruction 1569B for full installation details)
Electrical requirements
The Lycoming EIS current requirement at 2700 RPM is an external supply of 8.5 - 30V DC power to operate. The airframe must be equipped with a 12-volt battery having a minimum capacity of 20AH or a 24-volt battery having a minimum capacity of 8.5AH. If operating two EIS units on the same engine, the second EIS must be connected to a backup or second power source of at least 2.5 AH, that can be charged by the aircraft main bus. A TCW Integrated Back-Up Battery System meets this requirement.

FACT FILE - THE UNCONVENTIONAL, BIZARRE BELL AIRACUDA

Spatial distortion
On Wednesday, 20 December 2023, a pilot and two transmission line workers on-board a Bell 407 helicopter with registration ZS-RXO took off from Majuba Venus Power Station landing zone (LZ) in KwaZulu-Natal province to conduct aerial work on the T299 mast (a section of Majuba Venus Power Station). The pilot intended to land back at the departure landing zone.
