Dinh Q. Lê/Vietnam/US
SPLENDOR & DARKNESS (STPI), 2017
Screen print and laser engraving on paper, edition of 15
Known for his montages and photo-weaving technique, world-renowned artist Dinh Q. Lê immigrated to the US to escape the Khmer Rouge. His practice delves into the layers of history that rewrite itself over wars that were won and lost. In this work, Lê combines portraits of the Khmer Rouge victims with deities against a backdrop of temple wall carvings, juxtaposing Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum figures against the Angkor Wat gods. This powerful act highlights the loss that was the foundation of Cambodian monuments, and conjures new sights and perspectives on our history.
The artist’s works have been collected by and exhibited at MoMA, New York; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; The Asia Society, New York; the 2008 Singapore Biennale; the 5th Asia Pacific Triennial at QAGOMA, Australia; The Gwangju Biennial 2006, Korea; the Venice Biennale 2003; documenta 13; and the 2013 Carnegie International.
