'HE REALLY WANTED TO HURT ME'

HE'S certainly no novice when it comes to dominating the headlines. At first, it was thanks to his fancy footwork on the soccer pitch - but in recent years it's been one personal scandal after the other.

However, the latest allegations are the most serious yet. This time Ryan Giggs is in the dock at the Manchester Crown Court where he's facing charges that he abused his ex-girlfriend.

Kate Greville (36), who was with the former Manchester United player for three years between 2017 and 2020, has made shocking allegations about their "toxic" relationship.

Ryan faces charges of assaulting Kate and her sister, Emma Greville, in an altercation at their home in November 2020, when Kate was moving out. Other charges include controlling and coercive behaviour and if convicted, he could spend up to five years in prison.

A ROMANCE GONE WRONG

Kate and Ryan met in 2013 when Kate, a PR executive, was hired to promote his Hotel Football venue, which he launched with former United teammate Gary Neville.

Their relationship started in 2014 while they were both married. Kate left her husband soon after the affair began but Ryan stayed married to Stacey Cook, mother of his two kids, until 2017.

They bonded over their unhappy marriages, Kate told the court, and in the early days, she felt he was her "soulmate and best friend".

But things took a drastic turn and prosecutor Peter Wright told the jury they'd be seeing a "much uglier and more sinister side to his character" that involved a "litany of abuse, both physical and psychological, of a woman that he professed to love".

A STEADY BREAKDOWN

Kate, who has a three-month-old baby with her new partner, testified from behind a screen in the first week of the trial.
