NEW CRIME DRAMA

Shetland

Wednesday, 9pm, BBC1

The unthinkable happened in the closing moments of Shetland's sixth season last when the show's year moral compass, DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall), found himself under arrest.

Terminally ill murderer Donna Killick (Fiona Bell) had manipulated her ex-lover Duncan Hunter (Mark Bonnar) into helping her end her life - then framed him and Perez for her murder as her twisted final act.

As the crime drama returns to BBC1 this week for a new six-part series, the action resumes one year later with Duncan in prison, after admitting to assisting in Donna's suicide, while Perez is only just returning to duty after serving a suspension - and the incident has left its mark on him.

'He's getting to the stage where he's not sure whether he thinks it's worth it any more,' says Henshall. 'He's beginning to discover that there are other things in life besides being a policeman.

After reuniting with his colleague DS Alison Tosh' McIntosh (Alison O'Donnell), Perez is alerted to the disappearance of Connor Cairns (Nicholas Nunn). Connor's anxious parents, who are relative newcomers to Shetland, raised the alarm when he failed to return home after the launch for his folklore-inspired graphic novel The Wulver.
