FOUL LADY FORTUNE
SFX UK|November 2022
Rosalind Lang is an assassin who can't die. You might think that would make this novel a little undramatic, but you'd be wrong. She's operating outside her normal remit: it's 1931, the Japanese Imperial Army are moving against China, and Rosalind is assigned an espionage mission.

A series of murders in Shanghai have been linked to a newspaper there; Rosalind must go undercover and learn more about the situation, while keeping her own secrets. And as the conspiracy turns out to be deeper and more complex than anyone predicted, the stakes get higher and higher.

Foul Lady Fortune is more of a conspiracy thriller with fantasy elements than a fantasy novel as such, and in the usual E style of conspiracy thrillers, it contains rather a lot to keep up with: a large cast of characters, some with more than one name, some of them working for more than one side. But Chloe Gong unfolds it all with care, and while the novel takes a little while to get going and is a little flat in places, over time the reader becomes properly invested in her cast of young agents with messy lives.
