Time goes by in the blink of an eye, and if there's any doubt, look no further than Creed's Grammy-winning chart-topper "With Arms Wide Open." Frontman Scott Stapp wrote the song in 1998 upon learning his first wife was pregnant with their son Jagger. Now that baby has a baby. "I don't feel like a grandpa!" Stapp, 50, tells People on a recent Zoom call from his Nashville-area home.
"When I was a kid, grandpas had gray hair and a cane. But a grandpa I am-and a proud one at that." Welcoming grandson Cash into the family fold last September is but one recent achievement for Stapp, who just unleashed his fourth solo album, Higher Power, and will launch a Creed reunion tour this summer. But getting to a good place has been a labor of love for the musician, whose addiction issues led to a very public breakdown in 2014, which included a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder that further complicated his recovery.
