Amy Poehler can still recall a crucial on-set lesson Maya Rudolph passed on to her when they started working together on Saturday Night Live more than two decades ago. "Maya would always remind me that it was supposed to be fun," says Poehler, 51. "That t was the secret sauce to that show, and it was definitely a gift she gave me." The secret sauce is all over the second season of Baking a reality baking-competition series they're cohosting that's now streaming on Peacock. "The idea of two moms hosting an explosive baking show just made us laugh," says Rudolph, 50, who has four children Pearl, 17, Lucille, 13, Jack, 11 and Minnie, 9-with her partner, film director Paul Thomas Anderson. (Poehler shares sons Archie, 14, and Abel, 12, with her ex-husband, actor Will Arnett). The duo got together to talk about their lasting bond, the evils of frosting and partying Christmas elves.
What can we expect from the second season of Baking It?
AMY POEHLER Double the violence. Lots of explosions. When Maya and I make stuff, we're always like, "This should be louder and edgier and more scary." Really, though, Baking It is the same warmhearted show, but we do blow things up this season, and that is not a joke.
MAYA RUDOLPH We just thought it would be fun to be our true selves, which is funny and goofy and warm.
Amy, you're an executive producer in addition to being Maya's cohost. What's it like to be two moms in charge?
