BREAKING HIS SILENCE
"While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive," Mangione told supporters in a statement. "I look forward to hearing more in the future."
The last time Luigi Mangione spoke out was before a Pennsylvania court appearance, when he shouted a nearly unintelligible rant about the "insult to the intelligence of the American people." He broke his silence again on Feb. 15, in his first public statement since his arrest for the Dec. 4 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. “I am overwhelmed by and grateful for everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support," he said in the seemingly coherent statement, which was posted on a website set up by his lawyers. "Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded [NYC's Metropolitan Detention Center] from across the country, and around the globe."
Mangione's alleged murder of Brian Thompson "doesn't make sense," family friend Giovanna Blatterman says in the documentary Who Is Luigi Mangione?, adding that Luigi comes from a "respected family."
