Strolling through the streets of Soho in New York City on February 13, Katie Holmes smiled as she chatted with her daughter, Suri Cruise. The teenager, rugged up in a shearling embroidered coat from Maje, will turn 18 on April 18, and Holmes has been open about the mixed emotions she feels as her daughter grows up.

“Every day, kids get a little further away from you. That’s a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it’s heartbreaking,” she said in a 2017 interview with Town & Country. “You want them to stay with you forever, but they’re these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need – and then they’re going to go. And that’s going to be very, very sad for me.”

Holmes, 45, has primarily been a single parent since gaining sole custody of Suri after famously blindsiding her Scientologist ex Tom Cruise with divorce papers in 2012 after six years of marriage. The couple were engaged after a spot-lit, two-month courtship, tying the knot with their baby by their side in Italy in November 2006, a month after Suri made her public debut on the cover of Vanity Fair.

After the split, Holmes moved to New York City to start a new life with her little girl. “Being raised by a single mum in New York has made Suri who she is,” a source told The Daily Mail. “Katie has always put Suri first and Suri loves her mum more than anything.”
