STUNNING SINGER n her role as aspiring singer and dancer Coco Hernandez in the 1980 hit film Fame, Irene Cara has a poignant line about legacy. “How bright our spirits go shooting out into space, depends on how much we contributed to the earthly brilliance of this world. And I mean to be a major contributor!”

Cara, who died on November 25 at age 63, contributed significantly during her time, starting with the musical drama’s anthemic title track, which earned her Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance. “She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films,” Cara’s publicist, Judith Moose, said in a statement announcing her passing of undisclosed causes at her home in Largo, Florida.

In 1983, Cara followed up her huge hit by singing and co-writing ‘Flashdance... What A Feeling’ for the soundtrack of the blockbuster Flashdance, earning herself Grammy awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special. She also won an Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1984 Academy Awards.
