Miriam Margolyes is making a few things very clear in her gorgeous photoshoot and interview for British Vogue’s July cover – she’s out, loud and very proud. The 82-year-old actress celebrated her sexuality in a set of vibrant and fun photos as she posed nude while declaring that she “wouldn’t want to be straight for anything”.
“Gay people are lucky, because we are not conventional,” she told the magazine.
Margolyes came out as a lesbian in 1966 – a time when homophobia was still rife and homosexual acts between men were illegal in the UK. Brought up in a strict Jewish family in Oxford, her parents were unable to accept her as she was.
“I never had any shame about being gay or anything really,” she shares. “I knew it wasn’t criminal because it was me. I couldn’t be criminal.”
