Superstar, feminist icon, warrior, not to mention the Queen of Rock‘n’Roll – Tina Turner was described as many things during her eventful life. She died last Wednesday from natural causes at her home near Zurich, Switzerland. She had suffered ill health in recent years, being diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and having a life-saving kidney transplant in 2017 – with the organ donated by her husband Erwin Bach.
As everyone from heartbroken fans to world leaders and fellow rock legends expressed their sadness at the news of Tina’s death, one phrase to describe the 83-year-old singer appeared again and again. In surely the most fitting tribute, she will forever be remembered as “simply the best”.
The journey that took a young Anna Mae Bullock from her dirt-poor childhood in Tennessee to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is the stuff of legend. She was a modern icon who lived life to the fullest, but she first had to go through a variety of challenges to eventually find her happily ever after.
