Gangubai Kathiawadi was the standout film of the 68th Hyundai Filmfare Awards 2023 with Maharashtra Tourism. The biopic took home biggies like Best Film, Best Director - Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) - Alia Bhatt - and host of technical awards like Best Dialogue, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Sound Design, Best Background Score, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography. The other big winner was the film championing LGBTQ rights, Badhaai Do. It won the Best Film Critics' Award, as well as Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male) Award, which went to Rajkummar Rao and the Best Actress Critics' Award, which went to Bhumi Pednekar. She shared the trophy with Tabu, who won it for her double role in the horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. Badhaai Do also won the Best Screenplay and Best Story trophies. Veteran Prem Chopra was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was a homecoming of sorts for Prem Chopra, who used to work in the circulation department of the Times Of India before venturing into films. He was born on September 23, 1935 in Lahore and the family moved to Shimla after Partition. He was actively pursuing theatre since his college days. After graduation, he moved to Mumbai as he wanted to act in films and got a job with TOI. He started his career as the leading man in the Punjabi film, Chaudhari Karnail Singh (1960), which proved to be a hit.
