Global olive oil prices topped US$8 900/t (about R168 000/t) in September, driven by the an off-year in the growing cycles and extremely dry weather in much of the Mediterranean. The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service reported that the average price in August was 130% higher than the year before, with prices quickly surpassing the previous record of US$6 242/t (R120 000) set in 1996 and no sign of easing.
